How a European logistics operator unified 42M daily telemetry events

The Situation

Our client operates a pan-European freight and cold-chain distribution network with over 4,500 active delivery vehicles and 18 regional distribution fulfillment hubs. Each vehicle acts as an event publisher, reporting GPS coordinates, engine diagnostics, and cargo temperature readings every few seconds.

As their fleet expanded, their legacy messaging infrastructure began experiencing severe delivery backpressure during peak morning dispatch windows. High protocol overhead and cellular handoffs across European borders caused connection drops, leading to gaps in compliance audit trails. Furthermore, regional dispatch centers needed live, low-latency event delivery rather than polling centralized databases.

What We Found

An initial architectural audit surfaced three core bottlenecks:

  • Chatty Single-Event Requests: Cellular modems in vehicles were opening separate TCP connections for individual sensor readings, creating massive HTTP header overhead over roaming mobile connections.
  • Heavy Daemon Footprints: Edge gateway computers in fulfillment hubs struggled to run heavy telemetry broker daemons, consuming significant memory.
  • Subscriber Latency: Regional dispatch hubs relied on polling queries that lagged behind physical vehicle locations by several minutes.

What We Built

Rather than adding more intermediate message broker instances, we transitioned the telemetry architecture to Axisforge Events:

1. Publisher Batching Strategy

We configured vehicle telematics firmware to buffer events locally in memory for 15 seconds, bundling records into efficient, structured JSON batches up to 512 KiB. These are dispatched over HTTPS POST directly to the European endpoint at https://api.axisforge.tech/api/v1/sync/events?t=....

2. Continuous Stream Delivery for Subscribers

For regional operations centers, dispatch consoles connect as subscribers using persistent HTTPS GET streaming connections. Dispatchers consume incoming vehicle alerts and temperature readings with low-latency chunked delivery without polling delays.

3. Frankfurt Storage & Compliance

All telemetry events are stored and processed in Frankfurt, Germany, satisfying pharmaceutical cold-chain regulatory compliance with automated 90-day retention lifecycles.

The Results

Within eight weeks of full fleet rollout, the logistics operator achieved:

  • High Delivery Reliability: 99.99% event streaming reliability during peak transit hours across Europe.
  • 58% Cost Reduction: Infrastructure spend dropped by more than half compared to their previous broker cluster.
  • Low-Latency Visibility: Dispatchers receive temperature threshold alerts in under 3 seconds, enabling proactive driver interventions.
